Hacemos la Ciudad

Hacemos La Ciudad (We Make the City) is a comprehensive civic reimagining initiative that examines and questions how colonial ideology informs contemporary civic life, architecture, and the infrastructure of our cities.

The project warps traditional planning processes, infusing the everyday with the magical, inviting collaborators to imagine a decolonized civic landscape, and to develop their own, more equitable version of the city.  From chucherias hot glued together to make building blocks for city planning, to costumes that collage ropa usada with dollar store textures, Hacemos la Ciudad asks us to rethink how we see the world around us, and to reconsider what is (and what is not) possible.

Hacemos La Ciudad culminated in the creation of a 3 part vision for a de-colonial border space. You can read these community visions and download the booklets below.  The BODY book speaks to how individuals can advance decolonial values in their daily actions.  LAND addresses how city officials and urban planners can reimagine the development of public space.  THOUGHT addresses how we can imagine shared spaces as informed by ancestral wisdoms.
